Abstract

394,422. Rotary engines. COX, A. F., Carlton Lodge, Thicket Road, Anerley, London. Feb. 9, 1932, No. 3808. [Class 110 (ii).] A rotary engine or pump comprises a rotor E, moving within a fixed, ported sleeve AS, having four flattened surfaces E<2> upon which slide the .tips of vanes F. The vanes slide radially in slots in a piston D, eccentrically positioned with regard to the rotor, and the inner ends of the vanes bear on a floating block H. The piston has a loose sleeve D<4>. Inlet and outlet ports, A<1>, A2 communicate with the -working chambers through slots E<1>. Parts E<3> are cut away to prevent fluid being trapped by a vane tip at the end of a flat E<2>. The block may be tapered axially and the vanes also tapered to bear on the block which may be adjusted by a .screw against a spring pressure, to take up wear. The flats E<2> may be inclined instead of tangential to the direction of motion, the indications being opposite in different pairs of vanes. The width of a flat is at least twice the eccentricity of the piston D plus the vane width. The discharge port may be longer than the suction port to prevent back pressure. Shoes of hard metal may be provided on the vane tips, and bearing strips on the flats. Specification 394,423 is referred to.
