Abstract

330,353. Sanguineti, A. April 17, 1929. Control mechanisim.-In rotary grip control devices for operating variable-speed gears through a pair of Bowden or other tractive members, a manually releasable spring loaded catch 18 on the rotary member engages a slot or slots 7 in a fixed collar 3 to stop and to hold the parts positively in one or more gear positions. The collar 3 is integral with the inner longitudinally slotted sleeve 2 which is clamped to the handle bar &c., and guides the slide blocks 26 to which the tractive members 28, 29 are connected, lugs 27 on the slide blocks being engaged by the inclined end 9 of the outer sleeve or grip member 8. The spring catch 18 and also a separate lever 15, which through a traction member 33 controls the clutch of the variable speed gear, are pivotally mounted in a bracket 12 clamped to the outer sleeve 8 by a split collar 10 and bolts 11. The boss of the clutch lever mounted on a pivot 17 is formed with a nose or extension 16 which projects through a slot 14 in the outer sleeve and engages V-notches 6, slots or the like formed in the inner, fixed, sleeve 2 to locate and lock the rotary member in set gear positions when the lever 15 is released. The locking catch 18, in the form shown, slips into a slot 7 in the collar 3 in second gear position, preventing movement to top gear until it has been manually released, but slots corresponding to each gear position may be provided if desired. The projecting edge of the bracket '12 moves in a recessed part 23 of the collar 3, the shoulders at the ends of the recess thus limiting the movements of the rotary control member. The catch 18, which is pressed into action by a spring 22, is mounted on a squared spindle 19 to the end of which is secured a. finger operating piece 20. When Bowden or like transmission devices 28, 29 are employed as traction members, the casings thereof abut against a separate split collar 30 clamped to the handle bar &c., a pin 32 in such a collar engaging a hole in the collar 3 to give additional security against rotation. The outer rotary sleeve 8 is provided with a covering tube 24 and rubber &c. grip sleeve 25, supported at the outer end by a fixed bush 34 screwed on to the end of the fixed sleeve 2. At the controlled end, the traction members actuate a lever, disc or like oscillatable member connected to the speed gears in any suitable manner.
