Control mechanism.-In handle-bar control devices for variable speed gears of motor vehicles, a rotary hand grip controlling the gear positions carries a clutch operating lever having a lug adapted to engage notches in a stationary bracket, so that the hand grip can only be rotated when the lever has been actuated to de-clutch. The lever 12, which actuates the clutch through Bowden mechanism 20, is pivoted at 13 to a bracket 10 secured to lugs on a rotary grip 3 which actuates two Bowden control devices 25, 27 connected to a selector lever on the outside of the gear box. The lever 12 is formed with a lug 14 adapted to engage one of a series of notches 15 - - 18 on a split collar 4 clamped to the handle-bar 1. The mouths of the notches may be rounded off as at 17 and a click indicator 38 may be provided to facilitate positioning. The handle 3, rotation of which is limited by shoulders 37 on the collar 4, is secured to a sleeve 2 retained on the handle-bar by a stud 7 screwed through the collar 4 into an arcuate slot 8. The Bowden cables 25, 27 pass through holes in the collar and blocks 29, 33 on the ends thereof en. gage oppositely inclined helical slots in the sleeve 2 and longitudinal slots in an intermediate fixed sleeve 6 rigidly secured to the collar 4, so that the cables are simultaneously moved in opposite directions upon rotation of the hand grip.
