329,547. Aitken, R. L. June 20, 1929. Suction apparatus and processes.- Dredging is effected by means of a suction head 16 secured to a steel pipe 12 attached to a pontoon 13 divided by partitions into end water ballast chambers and a central chamber; the pipe 12 is connected through flexible pipe 11, ball and socket joint 10 and pipe 7 to the pumps and the pontoon is connected to chains 17 attached to a frame 18 or passing through fairleads to attachments on the dredging vessel. The pontoon may be emptied, as by compressed air supplied through a pipe arranged alongside the pipe 11, so as to float the apparatus, or it may be flooded as desired to sink the apparatus and apply a desired pressure to the suction head. More than one tank may be used.
