327,932. Weiss, C. W. Aug. 6, 1929. Variable-speed gearing comprises an epicyclic train controlled by a variable nutating gear comprising universal joints. The driving element a of the gearing is connected through spherical element d to the internal gear e of the epicyclic train. The sun gear. h is connected bv a sleeve to the driven element h<3> of the gearing. Planets f<3> are supported in a carrier f<1> fast upon a shaft g with a head g<1>. The head g<1> is connected through a doubly-universally-jointed member m, to a second k<2> secured to a nutating ring k. The ring k supports pairs of rollers l which trace zig-zag paths on the inside of spherical member d. Speed is varied by changing the angular displacement of the bearing k<3> of the outer head k<2>. The bearing k<3> is supported in a slider i which moves angularly in a fixed guideway b'. A rack i<1> upon the slider i is engaged by a central pinion i<2>, so that by turning manually a wormwheel i' the speed of the whole device can be varied from zero to a maximum. A modification is described in which the elements corresponding to a, h<3> are arranged at the same end of the gear device.
