Abstract

323,570. Pobjoy, D. R. Oct. 11, 1928. Cylinders, varying clearances of. - A piston 3 is moved in and out of an auxiliary cylinder 2, to provide two compression ratios, by a toggle linkage and the cylinder pressure respectively. Oil, compressed by a pump driven by the engine, acts on a plunger 23 which is connected by an adjustable rod 16 to the toggle linkage 11, 9; the link 1 comprises a bell-crank lever which is pivoted to an extension 8, either rigidly or flexibly mounted on the engine cylinder 1; in the latter case a tie rod connects the extension to the engine base.. The piston 3 has conical or flat faces 4, 6, which engage with corresponding seats on the cylinder, and packing rings; the outer seat may be formed in a liner for the auxiliary cylinder. The toggle linkage may be operated mechanically and its movement may be controlled, automatically, with the altitude, or conjointly, with the throttle valve, a supercharger, or a variable inlet valve timing gear.
