Abstract

374,875. Oil engines. THAHELD, F. A., 1403, Pennsylvania Avenue, Dallas, Texas, U.S.A. March 12, 1931, No. 7700. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi).] Cylinders receiving liquid fuel; valve gear; regulating.-In a radialcylinder oil engine, the fuel is supplied to the injectors by pumps 126, Figs. 3 and 7, and pipes 99, the pumps being connected together by passages 121 formed in the crank-case wall and connected at 171 to a pipe 170 leading to a further supply pump. The pump plungers 126 are actuated by rockers 129 and cams 142 so as to draw fuel from the passages 121 through ports 125, and force the same through discharge valves 118 to the injectors. The cams 142 are formed on a flange 140, Fig. 11A, at one side of a disc 88, which has at its other side a second flange 881 formed with cams 89 which actuate the airinlet and exhaust valves 60 through tappets 81 and push rods 79. The pump rockers 129 are pivoted to a disc 138, by angular adjustment of which the timing of the injection and the stroke of the pumps are varied. This adjustment is effected by actuation of a plunger 160 connected by a link 158 to a lug 159 on the disc 138. This disc is connected to a decompression ring 136, which may thus be also angularly adjusted to bring decompression cams 162 under the tappets 81, thereby lifting the valves 60. When this occurs, the pump rockers 129 are adjusted so far that their pivotal ends come beneath the plungers 126, Fig. 7, so that the rockers are not operated. The plungers are, however, sufficiently raised to close the supply ports 125 and prevent air from entering the fuel line. The cam disc 88 is formed with internal teeth gearing with a pinion 155, Fig. 3, connected to another gear wheel 151 meshing with a pinion 150 on the crank shaft. The combustion chamber is constituted by an eccentricallyformed depression 109, Figs. 3 and 19, in the piston head offset towards a radial groove 109<1> communicating with the injection valve 80. This valve comprises a plunger 211, Fig. 22, formed at one end into a needle valve 102 controlling an injection nozzle 106 of Venturi form, and bearing at the other end against a spring 103. Fuel supplied by the pump enters through passages 220, 221 and opens the valve against the pressure of the spring 103. Fuel leaking past the plunger 211 is withdrawn through a byepass 222 by the force of the injection. Valves.-A single poppet valve 60 in each cylinder head serves both for exhaust and air-admission.
