Pistons, balancing laterally. - In a doubleacting engine with a stepped piston the lateral stresses due to the connecting rod are taken up either by slippers m, Fig. 3, at opposite sides of the large diameter part g of the piston or by a guiding abutment l<1>, Fig. 1, projecting into the piston interior. In the first arrangement an extension k on the piston forms with the cylinder h the annular combustion chamber; it may slide in a long cylinder l or in a short one in which case the packing rings are in the fixed part. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the gudgeon a is mounted in an extension o of the piston, the extension sliding in the guide P; the gudgeon is within the guide throughout the piston stroke.
