Abstract
321,676. Wesemann, H. Aug. 10, 1928. Hatching-appliances. - In an incubator in which the egg drums are rotated a blade wheel is used to effect the rotation and at the same time to operate devices for ventilating and distributing the air in the incubating chambers. An egg drum 14, Figs. 1 and 2, preferably cubical, holding egg trays 15 with double layers of eggs between perforated top and bottom plates, is mounted on a shaft 7 which extends through the wall of the incubating chamber and carries a blade wheel 8 with buckets 9 on to which water drops in a regulated flow from a container 10. The wheel has radial rods 29 with adjustable weights 29<1> and rotates through 180‹ at intervals which are. controlled by adjusting a regulator 13 for the water flow. A sprocket wheel 19 on the shaft 7 is connected to a sprocket wheel 21 on an auxiliary shaft 22 at the top of the incubator which works rotary slides 27 operating in conjunction with air outlet holes 24 and flat slides 25 covering air boxes 23. Air inlets 28 at the bottom of the incubator, heaters 58, and air gaps 15<11> between the egg trays 15 are provided to ensure efficient distribution of the air. In a modification, Fig. 3, the water flows from the container 10 on to a tipping gutter 30 with a finger 33 which coacts with two or more brake stops 35 on the blade wheel, the direction of rotation of the wheel and the drums being thus reversed. The buckets on the wheel are made double and a central air shaft 15<1> extending through the drum is provided. In another device for reversing the direction of rotation of the drum a blade wheel 8<1>, Fig. 8, rotating always in the same direction, is loosely mounted on the shaft 7 and through sprocket wheels 44, 46 and a crank disc drives a crank rod 40 with a rack which rotates a pinion rigidly connected to the shaft 7. More efficient distribution of air in the incubator is obtained by blades 55, Fig. 12, rotating in the central air shaft 15<1>. These blades are mounted on a shaft 55<1> which rotates freely in a tubular extension of the shaft 7 at one end and at the other in bearings 53 in a ring hub 47 by which the inner ends of the drums are mounted when a series of drums is used. The ring hub is mounted on rollers 48 carried by a standard 49. The shaft 55 is driven by bevel wheels 54 and a shaft 56 from a bevel wheel on the shaft 22. Fresh air is supplied to the blades through two air tubes 60 united at the top to form an air hood 61. Rotary drums containing creeping-out trays are driven by sprocket wheel and chain connections from the shaft 22, and these drums are aerated by propeller blade wheels rotating above fresh air pipes.
