[Class 51 (ii).] In rotary-drum apparatus for the treatment of materials in contact with air or other gases, e.g. kilns, driers, and coolers, of the kind in which the drum is divided by longitudinal partitions 3 into a number of compartments or cells, conveyer flights 4 are fitted on the drum wall, the arrangement being such that the spaces defined by the partition walls and the conveyer flights occupy the whole cross section of the drum. The flights may connect the partitions 3 to the drum wall, as shown, or may lie between the outer edges of the partitions, the latter then being connected to the wall by supports having no conveying action. The flights may consist of one or more helices, or of separate blades, which may be adjustable or removable so that the speed at which the material travels may be controlled. The range of adjustment of the blades may be such that a local heaping up of the material can be effected. Vanes 6 are provided for guiding the material into the compartments formed by the partitions, and these may be hinged or made of flexible material so that their leading edges can be adjusted to or from the drum wall. The drum may consist of two or more concentric tubes each with partitions and conveyer flights.
