Abstract
317,857. Meiro, A. Aug. 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Coking and carbonizing processes.-Light hydrocarbons are obtained from solid fuels by subjecting the latter to low temperature carbonization in a series of retorts. fractionating the liquid products and returning the heavier hydrocarbons to the retorts to be cracked in contact with the hot fuel. Finely divided dry fuel is fed by a conveyer 21 through a valved funnel 25 into the first retort 1 and is passed along by a. worm conveyer to a pipe 38 connecting with a second retort 2, and similarly with retorts 3, 4, and 5. From the latter, the coke produced drops into an unheated retort 6 from which it is discharged to a storage bin 14. Heavy oils and pitch collecting in a reservoir 15 are pumped through a line 39 to a still 7 where they mix with distillates rising by pipes 24, 32 - - 35 from the retorts 1 - - 5. Benzines and light oils are drawn off from the upper of the still by pipes 26, 27, 28; the heavy residues are reintroduced by pipes 22, 23 into the retorts. The uncondensed products and gases pass by a pipe 36 to a condenser 8 and purifiers 10; the permanent gases, which are rich in hydrogen and methane, are compressed into reservoirs 13, and are used in part to heat the retorts by combustion in a flue 19, and in part are injected into the retorts to stir the mass and to aid the formation of light hydrocarbons. The cast or wrought iron of the retorts is said to act catalytically. Suitable, temperatures and pressures are 410-450‹ C. and 0.1-0.3 atmospheres.
