Abstract

298,547. Naamlooze Vennootschap Silica en Ovenbouw Mij, and Hiby, W. June 30, 1927. Coking processes.-The heat contained in thehot coke discharge from coke ovens or the like is. used in the carbonization, particularly at low temperature, of coal, lignite, peat, or wood by bringing the latter into contact with the hot coke. The hot coke may be charged alternately or simultaneously with the material to be heated, and a rotating drum may be used to facilitate mixing. After carbonization the semi-coke may be separated by screening or hand picking, or the mixture may be used as a domestic fuel. Theprocess may be used to obtain semi-coke dust which is mixed to the extent of 15-25 per cent with a coking coal to improve the quality of the coke, or which is used for briquettes. Coke from an oven 1 is discharged into a car 3 which conveys it to a bunker 5 into which it is charged together with coal from a car 4, the distillates escaping through an ascension pipe 6. The contents of the bunker 5 are discharged by a star wheel 9. The coke may be cooled by injection of steam or water at the bottom of the bunker, or washed coal may be added from an adjacent bunker 7 by means of a conveyer 8, the coal being dried. The process may be applied to the heating of oil shales.
