Abstract

314,841. Schmidt, K., and Kreis, F. April 3, 1928. Sweeping - machines; taking up refuse for removal.-Relates to a motor-driven sweeping machine for roads, railway platforms, and the like, of the type having a plurality of separate endless brush-bands 21, portions of which run on the ground, and consists in arranging the brushes associated with adjacent bands in offset interengaging relationship with one another. The brushes on the outside bands are preferably arranged obliquely to those on the inside bands to direct the refuse inwardly. The brushes are removably mounted in individual brush-holders 22 which cross-connect the driving chains of each brush-band. The brush-bands, which sweep the refuse up an inclined surface 36 into a bin 37, are driven by sprockets 15 and pass over guide pulleys 18, 19, 20 on a frame 6, which can slide in inclined guides 2, 3 on the vehicle frame. The sliding frame carries the motor 12 driving the sprockets 15 and is adjustable by equal amounts with respect to the ground and the surface 36 by linkage 41, 42 operated by a screw gear 39, 40. In order to accommodate the separate brushbands to the irregularities of the road surface and to keep the brush chains taut, the pulleys 19, 20 are respectively carried in horizontal and vertical spring mountings, and the lower runs of each brush-band are spring-pressed by plungers 34. The lower part of the surface 36 is fitted with a hinged flap 36" running on rubber rollers 39 which serve to direct paper or the like into the path of the brushes. The brushes are cleaned by a spring-pressed hinged wiper 50 which, together with the flap 36<11>, is adjustable with the brush gear. A gutter brush 56 as described in Specification 314,848 is provided. The brushes are enclosed by leather protective curtains 98.
