Abstract

412,383. Road - sweeping apparatus. ALIBERT, J. F. G., 25, Belgrave Square, Rathmines, Dublin. April 25, 1933, No. 12100. Convention date, May 2, 1932. [Class 107.] A road-sweeping machine is provided with an auxiliary rotary brush and a trough for conveying to a receiver the row of detritus left by the main sweeper, the brush and trough forming a unit adapted to be mounted on or connected to the machine. In the form shown, the auxiliary brush is of the caterpillar type and passes around two rollers 16, 17, carried respectively by frames 9, 8. The frames are mounted on a tubular spindle 7 secured to the axle 5 of the rear wheel 6 of the machine. The upper frame 8 is rigidly secured in position by two stays 10, 11, and the lower frame is angularly adjustable about the spindle by an adjustable tie rod 13. Such adjustment produces a corresponding movement in the trough 32, which is suspended by links 34, 35, from the frames. The belt is driven by mechanism comprising a toothed wheel 28 on the wheel 6 meshing with a toothed wheel 29 on a shaft 30, the latter being connected by a chain 31 to the shaft 14 of the roller 16. The brush comprises parallel belts or chains 18 carrying transverse bars 19 adapted to receive bunches 20 of bamboo or piassava. Metal plates 23, Figs. 4 and 5, secured to the bars form, with recesses 22, longitudinal channels whereby the bars may be slidden over guiding pieces 25 riveted to the belts 18. Each guiding piece may be provided with a positioning device comprising a spring-pressed stud 26 adapted to engage a recess in the bar 19. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification in which the caterpillar brush and trough are carried by a forked frame which is connected to the rear of the main sweeping machine by a universal coupling. The rear end of the frame is supported by a wheel, the shaft of which is connected by gear wheels and chains to the lower roller of the brush belt. Rollers on vertical axes are mounted on the frame and, by contacting with the kerb, guide the frame in its movement along the road. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
