Hydraulic mains. - Gas making retorts delivering to a common hydraulic main are controlled separately by dividing the main into separate compartments on the intake side, a single chamber being provided on the outlet side, the intake compartments being partitioned off from the common outlet compartment so as to provide separate adjustable seals for the several intakes. The pressure to which each retort is subjected may be varied according to any cycle of operations. Each ascension pipe a connects with a dip pipe b<1> which extends to the level of the liquor in a hydraulic main d, a curtain plate f<1> forming a cleaning chamber f from which extends the gas off-take g<1> leading to the foul main g. The front portion of the main d is divided into as many compartments c as there are dip pipes b<1> by vertical partition plates c<1>. Openings f<2> between the compartments c and the chamber f are controlled by slide valves h connected by rods h<1> to levers i having toothed quadrants j meshing with pinions k on a control shaft operated by a hand wheel l<1>. At the beginning of the carbonizing period, by releasing a clamping screw k<1>, the pinion is set so that the bottom of the valve h is just at the surface of the liquor. As carbonization proceeds the vacuum due to the exhausting fan is diminished by rotation of the shaft t which increases the depth of seal of the valve in the retort concerned in stages during the carbonizing period. During discharging and charging of the retort the pinions k are disengaged from the shaft l to permit the corresponding levers i and valves h to be lowered, whereby a deep seal is maintained.
