334,050. Woodall-Duckham (1920), Ltd., and Duckham, A. M. Aug. 16, 1929. Coke ovens.-In a coke oven A having end charging holes B and a central gas offtake D, means are provided for connecting the offtake D directly with the suction or foul gas main H during the charging operation. The offtake D is connected to the usual gas collecting main E by a pipe F fitted with a valve G, and to the foul gas main H by a pipe I provided with a valve J, the valves G, J, being interconnected so that when one is open the other is closed. The mains E, H, are connected at suitable points by ducts K each of which, in order to maintain the appropriate pressure in the main E, is fitted with a valve L actuated by a motor M controlled by a pressure operated switch N. In operation, at the commencement of the charging operation, the valve G is closed and the valve J opened, the gases generated by the introduction of the fresh charge into the heated chamber A, passing directly to the main H. As the evolution of gas quickly reaches a maximum and then gradually diminishes, a weight J<1> and a dash-pot O are provided to effect automatically a gradual closing of the valve J with consequent opening of the valve G.
