Abstract

Axles. - The camber of a pair of automobile wheels is adjusted by supporting the wheels whilst they are carrying the axle on supports permitting free relative lateral movement and subjecting the axle to a bending movement sufficient to bend the axle and set the wheels to the camber required. The wheels 1 are supported on blocks 22, 23, the latter on rollers 24. A bar 12 is suspended by inverted U-bolts 13 from the axle and is provided with a number of sockets 16 adapted to receive internally screw-threaded sleeves 17 in which work jack screws 18 with heads 19 engaging the axle. The latter is bent and the camber of the wheels adjusted by turning the jack screws, the angle of the wheels being gauged by a device of a common type now in use comprising pointers 10 co-operating with scales 10<a>; the pointers are carried by heads 6 which bear against the wheel rims 9 and are pivoted at 7 on the ends of slidably arranged bars 2, 3 urged apart by a spring 5. For bending the axle in the opposite direction the U-bolts 13 are moved outwards and the jacks set up between them.
