Abstract
310,383. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farben industrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 25, 1927. Electrodes.-Finely divided iron, nickel &c. for use as the active material of alkaline storage batteries is obtained by heating the corresponding metal carbonyl. Iron carbonyl may be decomposed in the hot free space of a heated vessel as described in Specification 269,677, [Class 72, Iron &c.], the temperature being between 200‹ and 300' C. Nickel carbonyl may be decomposed on smooth surfaces heated from 100‹ to 200‹ C., the nickel film so obtained being then comminuted. The metal powders may be finally heated to 500‹ in a current of hydrogen. The iron powder and the active mass containing the nickel flakes may be shaped for filling the pockets of the electrodes by pressing or heating in moulds. A method of decomposing nickel carbonyl is described consisting in passing the carbonyl vapour through an inclined porcelain tube which is rotated and heated and contains sharp-edged fillers. The wall of the tube becomes coated with a film of nickel which is detached by the movement of the fillers.
