Compensating for wear.-In an automatic device for adjusting the brake shoes of a drum brake to compensate for wear, the operating cam for the shoes c comprises a cylindrical head or housing on the usual shaft and containing two pieces e the outer faces of which are in contact with the ends of the shoes while the inner faces are inclined and engage a pair of conical discs f respectively screwed on to right- and left-handed threaded portions of a bolt g secured to a ratchet disc i engaged by one end of a cranked lever m mounted on a fixed pivot L A spring n holds the lever in contact with the, disc i. If in applying the brake, the housing and the pieces e have to be turned sufficiently to cause a tooth on the disc i to slip over the end of the lever m, the disc is turned during the return movement relatively to the housing, thereby causing the discs f to be moved towards each other to displace the pieces e radially outwards. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that a hand wheel may be provided for adjusting the disc i. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
