Abstract

342,390. Brakes. BUGATTI, E., Molsheim, Bas-Rhin, France. Nov. 8, 1929, No. 34164. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1928. [Class 103 (i).] Compensating for wear.-Pins 8 projecting from a brake-actuating cam 1 engage arcuate slots 7 in a washer 4 having ratchet teeth engaging corresponding teeth on the fixed bearing 3. the slots allowing the cam the normal stroke to apply the brakes. The cam 1 expanding the brake shoes 9 is fixed to a shaft 1a carried in a bearing 3 and is controlled by a lever 2, the washer 4 being interposed between the cam and the bearing 3 and pressed by springs 5 so that the lateral teeth engage the corresponding teeth 6 fixed to or integral with the bearing. When wear takes place the pins 8 contact with the ends 7a of the slots 7 and move the washer 4, the teeth being shaped to allow rotation in this direction only. Upon release of the brake the cam takes up an advanced position corresponding to that of the ends 7b of the slots 7. The ratchet teeth may be replaced by conical friction surfaces. To enable the full stroke of the brake pedal to be retained an adjusting screw is arranged between the pedal and the transverse shaft which it actuates.
