Abstract

305,264. Macintosh & Co., Ltd., C., Brazier, S. A., and Campbell, J. D. Nov. 4, 1927. Coating fabrics in long lengths.-In the process of coating fabric in which a coating of rubber solution or natural or artificial aqueous dispersion of rubber is mechanically applied to the fabric and the latter is then transported in the form of festoons through a drying chamber, the treatment is repeated by continuously passing one length of fabric through a series of coating machines each followed by a drying chamber. The fabric a, Fig. 1, is fed from a joining table b to a solution spreader c in which a coating is applied to one surface. The fabric then passes to a drying chamber d through which it is transported in the form of festoons in the usual manner as shown in Fig. 3. The temperature of the chamber is maintained at about 70‹ C. The fabric then passes to a second spreading machine, and thence through a second drying chamber, and so on. One or more of the final chambers may constitute vulcanizing compartments; preferably the spreading machine preceding this chamber or chambers is adapted to spread farina or other pro-vulcanizing agent on the coated material. From the last chamber the fabric passes to a reeling machine. The spreaders and drying chambers may be arranged in two series, one above the other, as shown in Fig. 4; such an arrangement facilitates the coating of both sides of the fabric. Alternatively the fabric may be made to return in a path parallel to its original direction by making one of the chambers of semi-circular form. One side of the fabric may be given a thicker coating than the other.
