Abstract

Offset machines; inking-apparatus.-An offset printing-machine is constructed to print from an aluminium or zinc plate, such as is used for lithographic printing, but printing is effected by etching the design in the plate to a slight depth, e.g., between 0.15 and 0.20 of a millimetre. A plate so etched is attached to a cylinder 3, and it is inked by an inking-roller 2 formed of a stiff roller provided with a thin elastic cover such asa rubber blanket. The roller 2 receives ink from supply rolls 1, and is mounted so that it is pressed against the raised parts of the design plate with a definite pressure, and it is positively driven. The offset roller 4 is also mounted so that it can be pressed against roller 3 with a pressure greater than that of the inking-roller 2, so that its elastic surface penetrates more deeply into the etched plate, and so takes up all the ink. The invention is also applicable to offset machines printing from flat plates co-operating with a flat platen on a rolling offset cylinder.
