Abstract
304,837. Smith, E. C. Bowden-. July 19, 1928. Hinged flap and like valves.-A stop valve made with an inclined flap 19 which is loose in its bearings and capable of seating freely is characterized by the flap having an extension 19<a> with a concave working face 20 adapted to bear upon and ride or slide over a convex surface or ridge 21 of the valve body. The extension 19<a> is guided by vertical guides which may be in form of a bifurcated part 22; the flap is retained by a cross-pin 33 bearing in recesses 34 formed at the rear of the guides 22. The valve has a vertically-operating spindle 16 working in a stuffing-box, as shown, the lower end being connected to the valve flap by means of a crosspin 31 disposed in elongated slots 32 in lugs 30 disposed on the back of the valve so that the working pressure acts substantially at the centre of the flap.
