Spools.-In spools of variable diameter, particularly adapted for the wet treatment of artificial silk threads, radially movable longitudinal parts of the periphery when moved inwardly provide in the end portions of the spool a continuous cover extending beyond the wound up goods and so prevent the liquid used from flowing through the side of the spool. A cylinder 1, slotted at 2, has its slots completely covered by longitudinal parts 3 having a row of apertures 5 for the passage of the liquid. Pins 4 are used to effect radial displacement of the parts which are pushed out during winding and occupy an inward position against the cylinder 1 during the liquid treatment. The slots may be dispensed with, the cylinder 1 being recessed to receive the parts 3, Fig. 3, apertures being then provided in the recesses and parts 3 and also in the parts of the cylinder 1 between the recesses. The recesses may be short stamped depressions at the ends of the cylinder 1. As shown in Fig. 7, the parts 3 have extensions 3<1> which in both the retracted and outermost positions form a continuous convex surface. In this latter arrangement ring shaped end parts 1 are rigidly connected by four bars 8. Ring shaped end pieces may be used and connected together by bars in which the pins 4 carrying the parts 3 are mounted, the parts 3 in their inward position forming a continuous cover in themselves.
