Abstract

303,839. Chauveau, L. L. E. Jan. 10, 1928, [Convention date]. Automatic transmitters.-Relates to an electric signalling apparatus adapted to transmit automatically in Morse code a predetermined signal, such as an S.O.S. signal, and additional signals such as the identification and location of a ship or aeroplane. As shown, the signals are transmitted under the control of a code drum T and code discs IND, SOS, which are driven through gearing by a motor M. The discs IND, SOS are provided with contact segments arranged in codes corresponding to the identification of a ship &c. and a predetermined signal such as a distress call, respectively. The disc SOS may be detachable in order to facilitate replacement by discs bearing different messages. The drum T has on its surface two contact sheets PI, P2, the former of which is shaped so as to form representations of the morse code of the numerals 0- - - 9 in positions corresponding to the brushes 0 - - 9. The plate P2 is similarly formed to represent "South," " West " &c. The brushes 0 - - 9 are connected to horizontal bars N0 - - N9 which co-operate with vertical bars R1 - - R9 through the intermediary of adjustable contacts C on the bars R1 - - R9 which are connected to the contacts of a distributor BA the contact arm of which is moved forward one step by ratchet-and-pawl mechanism for each revolution of the drum T. The arrangement is such that upon starting the apparatus by closing switch INT, the signal predetermined by the disc SOS is repeated three times and then the position of the ship &c. is given in degrees and minutes determined by the setting of the contacts C, one digit being transmitted for each revolution of the drum T. After transmission of the location, the name of the ship' &c. is repeated twice. This cycle is continuously repeated while the switch INT remains closed. Switches M1. M2 are provided for selecting codes corresponding to the nature of the latitude and' longitude. The name of the ship &c. may be transmitted by two code discs switched successively into the transmitting circuit.
