303,467. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 4, 1927. Substituted indoles are prepared by heating a monoacylamino compound of the aromatic series having a methyl group in the ortho position with sodamide in the presence of a diluent. That part of the sodamide which is utilized in forming the sodium salt of the acylamino compound may be replaced by metallic sodium. The diluent may be distilled off during the process. According to examples aceto-o-toluidine is heated with sodamide and metallic sodium in the presence of a solvent such as. naphthalene, dimethylaniline, diethylaniline or other tertiary aromatic amine whereby alpha-methyl indole is produced. In a second example, sodium aceto-o-toluidine and sodamide are heated in the presence of a solvent and in a further example 2 : 5-dimethylindole is obtained by heating 2-acetylamino-1 : 5-dimethylbenzene with sodamide and diethylaniline. In a similar manner 2 : 7-dimethylindol is obtained from .acetylated vic m-xylidine and a-phenylindole from benzoyl-o-toluidine.
