Abstract

298,960. Schars, A. J. Oct. 17, 1928. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 18, 1928]. Sweeping-machines.-A machine for scattering sand or gravel on roadways comprises a frame carrying apparatus adapted to pick up sand or gravel from heaps at the edge of a road and deliver it to a disperser which projects it over the roadway, a rotary brush being provided behind the picking-up apparatus. The machine may be mounted on two main wheels 2 and a front wheel 10 steered by means of a hand-wheel 6, a spindle 7, and bevel gearing 11. A platform 4, seat 5, and hooked traction bar 12 are provided. The machine may be self-propelled. An inclined casing 26 is carried by arms 14 pivoted on the axle 15, and is adjustable vertically by lever mechanism. The casing is provided with a wheel 24 at its front end and with a blade 22 and mouldboard 23 to direct the sand &c. into it to a transporter which delivers it to a rotary disperser. Any material not picked up is swept towards the middle of the road by an adjustable rotary brush 32 arranged as shown and provided with a mudguard 44. Flexible dispersing blades 33 at the end of the brush prevent accumulation of material. Several rotary brushes may be arranged to be brought into operation to allow of the machine being used as a sweeper. The transporting and dispersing appliances and the rotary brush may be driven from an engine 36 provided with coupling gear.
