Abstract
486,505. Removing litter from paths &c. JOHNSTON BROS. (CONTRACTORS), Ltd., and HOBBS, J. E. Dec. 2, 1936, Nos. 33089/36, 35734 /36, and 24628 /37. [Class 6 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A road-scavengering machine comprises a rotary cylindrical brush extending transversely of the machine and adapted to sweep litter forwardly to the inlet end or ends of one or more suction conduits, the latter being supported by a movable carriage which is movably mounted on rails extending transversely of the machine. In the construction shown, the machine comprises a frame 10 having an adjustable draw-bar 12 for connection with a towing vehicle. The frame carries an engine 14 which drives two rotary pumps 16 mounted one on either side of the frame. Each pump has a flexible inlet pipe 20 carrying a rigid tube 22 which is fitted with an end part 23 of rubber or like material. The tube 22 may be passed through an opening in a carriage which is supported by wheels 27 on rails 28 for movement transversely of the frame. An annular collar on the tube rests on the carriage and supports the tube at the required height above the ground. The carriage may be reciprocated by hand or by the engine 14. The rails 28 form the lateral members of a frame which is mounted between vertical guide bars and which can be raised and lowered by cables 32 connected to drums 34 driven by a handle 36. For cleaning road channels and the marginal edges of parks and the like the inlet conduits can be suspended from swivelling jibs 53 provided one on each side of the machine. These jibs can be swung laterally of the machine and may be provided with lifting and lowering means for the conduits. The outlet conduits 21 have nozzles 52 which deliver the litter to a receptacle in the tractor. A rotary brush 40 is arranged behind the inlet conduits and is adapted to sweep the litter forwardly towards these conduits. The brush is mounted on a pivoted frame 38 which can be raised and lowered by cables 45 actuated by a handle 49. In a modification the inlet end of the inlet conduit, or each inlet conduit, comprises a hood fitted with wheels and with a front baffle which has a hinged flap on its rear face. In another modification a nozzle, which may be divided into a number of sections, extends transversely over the full width of the vehicle. Additional nozzles extending lengthwise may be provided at one or both sides of the machine. Specification 425,014, [Group X], is referred to.
