Subaqueous sound signals.-Apparatus for the tramsmisson and reception of subaqueous sounds of over 200 periods per second comprises a stiff diaphragm, over the surface of which several signal current carrying ribs arranged within a magnetic field are distributed, suspended in such a way that the number of natural vibrations of the oscillating structure comprising the diaphragm its suspension and casing lies below 200 periods per second. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the diaphragm comprises a corrugated plate 9 stiffened by transverse ribs 10 to which are secured U-shaped current conductors situated in the field of the magnet system 12. The diaphragm is stiffened only in its central portion by the ribs 10 and the resilient edges are clamped in the casing 13, or the connection to the casing may be a separate thin plate or strips. In a modification, Fig. 3, the diaphragm comprises two plates 17, 18 held together by screws 22 and hollowed out to form elastic edge strips 19, 20 and a central recess which is filled with insulating material 21. The current carrying ribs 23 are secured to the insulating material by pins passing through lioles in the lower plate 18. The diaphragm may be a circular plate stiffened by radial ribs or corrugations.
