Abstract

252,002. Soc. des Etablissements Gaumont. May 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Magnetic instruments; loud-speakers; diaphragms.-The diaphragm a, Fig. 1, of a microphone or loud speaker is formed as a ring of elastic insulating material, such as rubber, which is preferably corrugated and is covered by a winding of wire secured thereto by a suitable adhesive. The diaphragm and coil are supported in the air gap between the poles N, S of an electromagnet or permanent magnet by rubber bands c. In modifications, the diaphragm is formed of a triangular or rectangular shape and may be mounted on one or both of the pole-pieces by non- magnetic pegs. Figs. 6 and 7 show another form which the diaphragm may take, the supporting strips d being secured to the pole-pieces by screws e by means of which the tension of the diaphragm may be adjusted. Fig. 10 shows a construction in which two curved horns f are employed, one on each side of the diaphragm, so as to direct the sound in the same direction, When it is not desired to utilize the vibrations of the air produced in the interior of the diaphragm, these may be directed towards the external air through filters of felt or cotton by forming grooves g in the supports d, Figs. 6 and 7. or by forming channels in the pole-pieces. The diaphragm may be further supported by providing it on each face with a part which has no winding, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7.
