Abstract
295,532. Triumph Cycle Co., Ltd., and Sykes, A. A. Nov. 23, 1927. Tension arrangements. - In chain tensioning- means, particularly for chains engaging sprockets on the crank shaft, cam shaft, and magnetic armature spindle of internal combustion engines, the tensioning-sprocket 5 is carried loosely on a crankpin 6 on a spring-biased rock-shaft 7, which carries with some lost motion a ratchet wheel 17 engaged by a stationary pawl 21. The spring 12, of clock-spring form attached to the framing 14 and to the disc 10 integral with the shaft 7, together with ratchet device effect automatic tightening of the chain when necessary, and the lost-motion means, comprising a lug on the wheel 17 engaging a slot in the disc 10, prevents shock by allowing limited reversal of the tensioning movement of the sprocket 5 during back-firing &c., the spring 12 cushioning such reversal. Endwise movement of the shaft 7 is prevented, and rotary motion is limited, by the use of a pin or screw 24 in the framing engaging a groove 23 extending partly around the shaft.
