Abstract

294,824. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Union Special Machine Co.). Dec. 5, 1927. Seams; work guides; presser-feet. - In a machine for sewing overlapping fabric sections and joining them by covering stitches, a guiding channel between fixed and re. silient sections of the presser-foot receive the edges of the fabric in such a way that one edge is vertical and the other inclined, and extensions of the parts of the presser-foot cause the edges to overlap ready for stitching after trimming. The stitching is effected by three needles, the middle one only of which penetrates both edges. A surface thread c is carried across the seam laid by a thread-carrying member and a hook co-operating with the needles beneath the work support is a single looper of the thread carrying type. The presser-foot 23 has a main section 24 and an auxiliary section 26, yieldingly held down by a spring 27. The sections a.re spaced apart to form the guide channel 28 for the edges of the material, one part of which has a vertical edge and passes under the section 24, Fig. 7, and the other an inclined edge and passes under the section 26, A fixed trimming blade 29 is mounted on the section 24 and a movable blade 32 on the resilient section 26. As the work is fed to the needles the edges are trimmed and extensions 34, 35 on the presser foot sections trim the. edge f under the edge f<1>. The resilient part 26 enables the machine to take materials of varying thicknesses. The projecting part 35 of the resilient presser-foot section carries two stitch fingers 36, 37.
