Abstract

976,654. Stitched seams, sewing machines. G. M. PFAFF A. G. July 26, 1962 [Aug. 2, 1961], No. 28703/62. Heading D1G. In a twin-needle sewing machine the edges of a strip 5 of material are folded inwardly and are then sewn to the respective edges of a garment part 38 and cover strip 31, while leaving the exposed part of the strip free from stitching. As shown, the machine is provided with a feeding foot 6, twin needles 15 carried by an oscillating bar 14, feed dogs 17 and a presser foot 18. The strip-folding guide 7, which is mounted at the rear of the needles, comprises downwardly inclined folding channels 11 attached adjustably to the feeding foot 6, and tongues 13 disposed within the members 11 and also carried, for both vertical and horizontal adjustment, by the feeding foot 6. The forward edges 13a of the tongues 13 are arranged in advance of the forward edges 11a of the members 11, and are positioned just above the work support 20 and closely adjacent the planes of the needles. Strip 5 passes to folding guide 7, where its edges are folded on top of the tongues 13, from a reel 4 and edge guide 3 mounted at the rear of the machine. Initially the work feed is made in the reverse direction A, whereby the folded edges 5a are sewn to the centre part 5c of the strip. The leading edge of the sewn strip is folded upon itself and is passed under a leaf spring 23 carried by an abutment 22 adjustably mounted on the work support 20. The machine is then stopped, the leading corners of the strip are folded over the pointed free end of spring 23, as at 35, 36, and a plate 37 is laid over the sewn strip, plate 37 being narrower than the space between the needles and extending as far as the latter via notches 17 and 19 in the feet 18 and 6 respectively. The work is then fed in the forward direction B, whereby the folded edges 5a of further strip 5 are progressively sewn to the initially sewn length of strip to form a projection 34. Plate 37 is then withdrawn. Finally, the folded-over edge of the cover strip 31 and the edge of the garment part 38 are placed upon the free end of the initially sewn strip at the stitching point, and are thus progressively sewn to the folded edges 5a of strip 5. It is stated that formation of the projection 34 may be omitted, parts 31 and 38 being sewn directly to the edges 5a. The edge of cover strip 31 is folded in a guide 26 pivotally mounted on a bar 25 carried by a bracket 24 fixed to the work support 20.
