Abstract

294,704. Ricardo, H. R. May 2, 1927. Addition to 261,435. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - A single poppet valve D controls a port in the end wall of the combustion chamber C<1> described in the parent Specification, admitting scavenging or combustion air which receives a gyratory motion before passing the valve D. This is accomplished by guide vanes E<1> on the valve guide, or on the face of the valve itself, or by leading the air tangentially into the inlet passage. The valve has a dome-like head D<3>. The combustion chamber, may have an uncooled liner and though substantially cylindrical, may have sides C<1> converging towards the cylinder and the fuel valves E<2> are arranged between the valve and the sides and spray fuel in a direction parallel to an adjacent side. In a four-stroke-cycle engine one or more overhead exhaust valves are located in an annular part C<2> of the head and the piston is scooped out to clear these valves, its stroke being such that substantially the whole of the charge is compressed into the combustion chamber. As shown the diameter of the valve D is ¥ the diameter of the outer end of the combustion chamber which has a mean diameter which is ¢ the bore of the cylinder; the valve D may be eccentric to the combustion chamber to allow more room for the fuel valves.
