Abstract

290,342. MacGregor, I. O. Aug. 19, 1927. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-In a rear-axle drive for a motor-vehicle comprising two or more sets of teeth 12, 13 on the crown wheel 11 and corresponding bevel pinions 15, 14 meshing therewith, the drive from the cardan shaft 60 to any one of the pinions can be effected, at any one time, either direct, or through variable-speed gearing, or through reversing gearing. The pinion 15 is integral with a sleeve 17 mounted in a bearing 18, while the pinion 14 is integral with a shaft 61 journaled in the sleeve 17 and spigoted within the end of the shaft 60. A sleeve 64 loose on the shaft 61 is adapted to be clutched to either of the pinions by a clutch member 36 co-operating with a selector fork (not shown) and splined on the sleeve 64, the member 36 having dogs 37 adapted to engage with dogs 35 on the sleeve 17 or with dogs 34 on a sleeve 63 keyed to the shaft 61. Teeth 66 formed on the end of the shaft 60 are in mesh with a spur wheel 67 running on a lay shaft 68. A wheel 70 splined on the sleeve 64 and co-operating with a selector fork 74 is provided with external and internal teeth 71, 72. By sliding the wheel 70 to the right, so as to engage the teeth 72 with the teeth 66, a direct, drive from the shaft 60 to the sleeve 64 is obtained. By sliding the wheel 70 to the left, so as to engage the teeth 71 with a spur wheel 69 rotatable with the wheel 67, a reduced drive is obtained. By sliding the wheel 70 still further to the left, so as to engage the teeth 71 with an idler wheel (not shown) which is in mesh with a wheel 75 rotatable with the wheel 67, a reversed drive is obtained. The teeth on the wheel 11 are so arranged that the gear tooth cutter, when cutting the teeth 13 to their full depth, will clear the tips of the teeth 12.
