Abstract

Heating by direct contact of steam.-Steam is generated by spraying water into superheated steam and the whole of the steam is then superheated and further steam generated by spraying water into it and so on until the desired quantity of steam is produced. Steam generated in a boiler 2, 3 in a furnace 1 passes through a superheater 7 into a chamber 13 into which boiler water is sprayed from a pipe 5. Steam flows from the chamber 13 through a superheater 8 to a second chamber 14 into which further boiler water is sprayed, and so on, steam being led off from the last chamber 18 into the water in an accumulator 25. Steam is taken from the accumulator through a superheater 28. 'The quantity of water sprayed into each chamber is controlled by a thermostat 19 at the end of the following superheater. Water collecting in the chambers may be led off into the accumulator. The accumulator may be filled with a liquid having a high boiling point such as diphenyl-oxide, the steam being then led through pipe coils in the liquid.
