Abstract

287,831. Sulzer FrÞres Soc. Anon. Oct. 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Liquid-level, maintaining; lubricant conveyed by mechanical means.-Accumulation of lubri. cant in a casing 11 housing the reversing gear for the propeller shaft of a marine engine is prevented by providing means for removing surplus lubricant above a predetermined level. Such means may comprise a suitable overflow opening; or, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, lubricant carried up by a rotating part 3 of the gearing may be removed by a blade 5 and guided by a plate 14 into a chamber 6 delivering through a pipe 9 passing through an opening 10 in the side wall of the casing into the engine crank case 13; or, as shown in Fig. 5, surplus oil may be delivered from the casing into the crank case by a gear pump 17. By arranging that the member 3 or the member from which the pump is driven rotates in one direction, during ahead drive but is stationary or rotates in the opposite direction during astern drive, oil may be allowed to accumulate in the casing during astern drive and overflow through the opening 10 into the crank case. Alternatively, the member may be one which always rotates in the same direction.
