H. L. WILSON OIL PUM P Filed Oct. 50 1922 llllllill Illllllll Gum M14 Patented Apr. 22, 1924.
UNITED STATES HARVEY L. WILSON, OF SOUTH HOUSTON, TEXAS.
OIL PUMP.
Application flled October 80, 1922. Serial l to. 597,858.
To all whom it may con/002%:
Be it known that I, HARVEY L. WILSON, citizen of the United States, residing at South Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Pumps, "of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an oil pump.
One object of the invention is to provide an oil pump specially designed for use on the motor of a Ford automobile for the purpose of pumping the lubricating oil from the rear end of the crank case and delivering the same into the front end thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of housing consisting of a hollow casting, specially designed for application to the motor, and enclosing and protecting the driving gears of the pump.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated, in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the P P- Figure 2 shows a rear view with the pump cover plate removed and,
Figure 3 shows a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the motor crank case of a Ford motor, the numeral 2 designates the inlet tube through which lubricating oil may be poured into the crank case for lubricating the motor. This tube is formed integrally with the end plate 3 of the motor, bolted to the rear side of the end plate 3. There is a hollow casting 4 which is also bolted to the adjacent side of the crank case and this casting is extended upwardly forming a gear box 5 whose outer side is enclosed by a removable cover plate 6. The numeral 7 designates the timing gear which is fixed on the forward end of the cam shaft 8. The timing gear 7 meshes with and drives the gear 9. In case the vehicle is equipped with a generator as 10 the gear 9 is fixed upon the generator shaft and drives the generator; In case, however the vehitleis not equipped with a self starter and does not have the, generator 10 a disc like plate 11 is bolted to the rear side of the casting 4 and is provided with a .which is in mesh with and driven b spindle 12 on which the gear 9 is-rotatably mounted. Fastened to the rear side of the upper end of the gear box 5 there is a pump casing 12 having the impellers 13 and 14 rotatably mounted therein and in mesh. These impellers consist of the ordinary intermeshing gear wheels and the "former is fixed upon and driven by the shaft 15. This shaft also carries a fixed gear 16 which is in mesh with and driven by the gear 17. This last mentioned gear is fixed upon a shaft 18 which also carries the fixed gear 1119 t e gear 9. The shafts and gears 15-19 inclusive are enclosed within the gear box 5 and said shafts are mounted to rotate in suitable bearings therein. There is a suction line 20 leading from the rear end of the crank case underneath and entering the pump casing 12 and leading from said ump casing there is a discharge line 21 which enters the top of the gear box 5. The pump keeps up a circulation of the lubricating oil drawing the same from the bottom of thecrank case at the rear end and discharging the same into the top part of the gear box and it travels thence through said gear box and hollow casting 4 intothe crank case at the other end, thus keeping up a continuous circulation of the lubricant throughout the motor.
What I claim is 1. The combination with an internal combustion motor, having a front end plate formed with an inlet tube, and having a cam shaftand a timer gear fixed thereon, of a hollow casting bolted to the inner side of said end plate, and extending upwardly forming a gear box, a removable cover plate forming the outer side of the said gear box and inclosing the same, a ump casing fastened to the rear side oft e upper end of the gear box, impellers rotatably mounted therein, and in mesh, a train of intermeshing gears driven from the timer gear and in operative connection with one of said impellers and driving the same, said train of gears being inclosed in said gear box, a suction pipe leading from the rear end of the motor crank caseand entering the top of said pump casing and a discharge line leading from the pump-casing and entering the top of the gear box. 7
2. The combination with an internal combustion motor, having a front end plate formed with an inlet tube, and having a cam shaft and a timer gear fixed thereon, of a hollow casting bolted to the inner side of the said end plate and extending upwardly forming a gear box, a pump casing fastened to the rear side of the upper end of the said gear box, impellers rotatably mounted in said pump casing and in mesh, operative connections between the timer gear and one of said impellers whereby the latter is driven, said driving mechanism being inclosed in said gear box, a suction pipe leading from the rear end of the'motor crank case and entering the top of the pump casing, and a discharge line leading from the pump casing and entering the top of the gear box.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HARVEY L. WILSON. Witnesses:
