Abstract

284,062. Gowan, S., and Metropolitan- Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Dec. 15, 1926. Dashpots of the kind in which ordinary forces are opposed by retarding forces following a predetermined law while abnormally large forces are opposed by a much greater retarding force, comprise a cylinder and piston arrangement haying a byep a s s through an auxiliary cylinder with a piston adapted to close the normal regulating valve when the pressure exceeds a certain value. A one way valve 5 is provided to close the ports 7 in the piston 1 and a bye-pass 8, controlled by an adjustable plug 9, connects the ends of the cylinder. An additional bye-pass 10, 18 is provided containing a piston 12 with a central passage 13 having a valve 14 at its upper end allowing flow in one direction. When the pressure below the main piston 1 exceeds a certain amount, the piston 12 rises against the resistance of the spring 19 until the ball valve 14 abuts against the fixed stop 17 and closes the passage 13.
