Abstract

263,298. Ellison, G. Dec. 18, 1925. Automatic c i r c u i t - breakers; retarding devices.-Dashpots used in connection with time-lag devices in electric circuit breakers are constructed with a yielding connection between the piston and its rod and with means whereby relative movement between the two provides a free passage between both sides of the piston so that the dashpot ceases to function as such under the action of abnormal forces. The pistons b, c are slidable on the piston rod d between limits determined by the collars h, i, a shoulder on the piston rod, and the helical springs g. e. The outer piston b is slightly conical and engages a similar conical part of the casing a, while the two pistons are formed with interfitting conical surfaces. During normal working as a dashpot, the pistons remain in the relative positions shown, but in the event of an excessively rapid upward movement of the piston rod, the upper piston b uncovers the port j which communicates with the hollow end part of the rod and allows free flow of liquid from above to below the pistons. The port j and hollow rod may be replaced by a flat on the rod. Specification 218,137 is referred to.
