Abstract
279,193. Fell, L. F. R. Aug. 10, 1926. Crank-actuated pumps; multiple-acting piston pumps; regulating delivery by opening by-passes and closing suction valves.-A fuel pump for internal-combustion engines comprises a sleeve &c. 2, 3 with axially displaced ports 5, 14, and a. plunger 4 in the sleeve in the longitudinal and transverse ports 12, 18, the plunger and sleeve being relatively rotatable to vary the amount of fuel delivered, or the period of injection. The ports 5, 14 are open to the fuel inlet 18 by passages 17, 15, 16, and during the down stroke of the plunger, fuel enters the barrel through the ports 5, and passages 13, 12. During the first part of the upstroke the passage 13 is open to the ports 14 and no delivery takes place. Delivery takes place when the passage 13 is closed by the portion 29 of the sleeve between the ports 14 and 5. The edges of the ports 14 are inclined, so that by rotating the sleeve or piston the quantity of fuel delivered and the period of delivery may be varied. The sleeve may be rotated by means of a worm 25 engaging a worm-wheel on a nut 21 meshing with a screwed portion of the sleeve. The sleeve may also be adjusted axially by rack and pinion 23, 22 to vary the moment at which delivery begins. Delivery ceases when the passage 13 opens into the ports 5. By this arrangement, delivery takes place only during the period of greatest acceleration of the plunger. A relief valve may be provided near the inlet 18. Leakage past the plunger may be returned to suction bv a piston 30 attached to the plunger and working in a liner 31 provided with ports 34 communicating with the suction. In the form shown in Fig. 9, the sleeve 3 is fixed and the plunger 4 is angularly adjustable. The ports 14, 5 in the sleeve are connected by passages 16 and are connected to inlet 37 and outlet 37<1> by annular channels 5<1>, 15.
