Abstract

277,875. Ricardo, H. R. March 28, 1927. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In order to give a whirling motion to the air entering the cylinder, the air inlet valve 2, in addition to being arranged eccentrically in the cylinder head and supplied by a passage 3 tangential to the whirl path, is provided with a seating which is cut away, as indicated at 1<c>, at the side towards which the turbulent flow is desired. The other side of the seating is masked as shown at 1<b>, and this masking may extend halfway round the seating and then merge into the cut-away portion. In a modification, the valve axis is slightly inclined, and the. correspondingly inclined valve seating is masked at the higher side, and at the opposite side merges into the under surface of the cylinder head.
