Dynamometers; systems for testing motor vehicles.-A machine for testing motor vehicles comprises one or two endless bands R<1>, R<2> passing round drums b<1>, b<2> which are mounted on shafts c', c<2> carried in bearings in frames J<1>, J<3>. The frames are supported at the forward ends on pivot blocks K<3> so that they may be inclined upwards or downwards by adjusting jacks M. In use, the vehicle to be tested is placed on the bands, and secured by ties i', i<2>. It is positioned so that the wheels bear, through the bands, upon adjustable rollers d<1>, d<2>. The rollers may be of irregular shape in order to reproduce the effect of irregularities in a road surface. When the engine of the vehicle is running, the power developed is transmitted to the bands, and is absorbed by a mechanical brake r or by other means. A belt-driven fan p is provided to represent air resistance. The effect of gradients is reproduced by inclining the frames J<1>, J<3>. Fig. 5 shows a modified energy absorbing arrangement in which the shafts carrying the forward drums b<2> are connected by a differential gear s, brakes t being provided for the two parts, so that the bands may be controlled separately. A brake r, a change-speed gear box y and an electric motor or generator v are arranged on the shaft, which is driven by differential gearing.
