Abstract
265,440. Renault, L. May 26, 1926. Dynamometers; systems for testing motor vehicles.-Relates to apparatus of the type comprising belt tracks, brake apparatus, and dynamometers in the anchoring chains for the vehicle, and comprises two moving tracks constituted by endless belts a, b running over pulleys c, d, the pulleys c corresponding to the rear axle of the vehicle being fixed on the same shaft f on which is fixed another pulley g driving a brake apparatus r, while the pulleys d corresponding to the front axle are fixed on independent shafts supported in pedestals n which can be adjusted by screws o to permit of tensioning the belts a, b. Jockey pulleys h are provided and the whole apparatus is located in a pit p so that the tracks are at the ground level. In use, the motor car is brought on to the tracks and is anchored in front and at the rear by cords or chains fitted with tightening screws. The engine is started and the power test made at different speeds by operating on the brake apparatus. An acceleration test may be made by observing the time taken to work from a low speed to a high speed by operating the acceleration pedal. For testing the brakes, the vehicle is run at a certain speed and the brakes applied, the time taken for the wheels to come to rest being noted. Moreover, the way the vehicle keeps on the tracks during braking gives an idea as to whether the brakes on either side need adjustment. Dynamometers may be attached to the cords k, l to indicate the force of traction.
