Linear-dimension gauges.- Apparatus for use in setting- out railway &c. track for gauging distance apart and the level of the rails comprises two trucks spaced a considerable distance apart and each having four flanged wheels 2 mounted on parallel axles 3. Each truck is provided with a transverse bar 1<a> having a lug 1<b> in which is slidably mounted a rod 4 in the ends of which are loosely mounted vertical members 13 for gauging the track, these members being maintained at a fixed separation by a rod 14 connected to one of the axles 3 by links 16 so as to turn therewith about the vertical. The bar 1<a> is formed at its centre with a flanged bearing surface 5 on which is seated a bearing surface 6<a> on a cross-member 6. A pin 10 passes through hubs in the two bearing members. The members 6 support a frame consisting of longitudinal members 8 and transverse end members 9, the members 8 being notched at intervals to receive transverse members 12. The members 8, 12 are provided with longitudinal and transverse levels 11. The members 8 are provided with central brackets 30 in which are secured sleeves 34, Fig. 4, having enlarged parts 34<a> above the central member 12. Rods 35 extend through the sleeves 34 and are provided at their upper ends with flag like members 36 having graduations 36<a> and movable in slots in the sleeves 34<a>. The rods 35 are cranked at their lower ends and surrounded by sleeves resting on the rails. These members 35 serve to indicate inequalities in the level of the rails. For holding the apparatus on a slope there is provided on one truck an arm 20 with a pin 21 which can be inserted in one of a number of holes in a disc 24 secured to one axle 3. A fork 17 is provided for traction purposes.
