Abstract
270,906. Redfern, C. G., (American Optical Co.). May 28, 1926. Spectacle lenses.-A multifocal lens comprises a major lens 1 of one index of refraction and an insert 8 of another index of refraction, the power of which is modified to compensate for the resultant astigmatisms of both the insert 8 and the portion of the major lens 1. This may be done by (1) grinding the curve 7 of the insert 8 to a toric shape (2) by making the curve 7 of a portion of a sphere and after fusing in place to bend the whole lens to toric form or (3) in place of bending the lens in this manner mentioned to grind the surface 3 to a toric shape sufficient to compensate the astigmatism.
