Abstract
275,460. Redfern, C. G., (American Optical Co.). Nov. 22, 1926. Spectacle lenses.-Lenses for use in protective goggles and which are also designed to correct the sight of the wearer, are formed from a toughened lens blank, having toughened surface layers and an untoughened central portion. A lens blank 17 of ordinary construction has the surfaces 18, 19 ground thereon to give the required power, but with the thickness left greater than is required in the finished lens. The blank is then edged and placed on a carborundum block 21 recessed to take the surface 19 of the lens. and the whole is heated until the blank approaches a plastic condition, when it is plunged together with the block 21 into a toughening solution. After thus toughening the surfaces they are reground and polished to produce a finished lens with toughened outer surfaces 18, 19 and an untoughened central portion 24. The final polishing is arranged so that the toughened layer is not entirely removed at any point.
