Abstract
268,316. Lacell, M. N., (Assignee of Jessup, A.). March 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Magnesium and chlorine, obtaining. - In the production of magnesium by electrolysis of fused magnesium chlorine, the chlorine produced is converted into hydrochloric acid outside the cell and used to treat magnesia or magnesium carbonate to form magnesium chloride which is then introduced into the cell preferably after dehydration. The hydrochloric acid or part thereof may also be used in the dehydration of magnesium chloride; it is recovered at the end of the dehydration and reintroduced into the cycle. The chlorine may be combined with hydrogen by electric or catalytic means; sufficient hydrogen should be provided to combine with any oxygen present to form water. Alternatively, the chlorine. together with oxygen is passed over red-hot coal forming phosgene gas which is then brought into contact with water or steam to form hydrochloric. acid and carbon dioxide. The water employed. may already contain some hydrochloric acid. The coal may be replaced by a hydrocarbon. The water or steam may be added before or during the action of the chlorine on the fuel. Part of the chlorines product of the cell may be combined directly and part by the phosgene process; part of it may also be used to react with milk of magnesium to form a mixture of chloride and chlorate which are separated by crystallization.
