Abstract

268,189. Hurd, F. W. June 14, 1926. Coal-cutting machines.-Feed mechanism for a coal-cutting or like machine comprises a feed rotor or shaft operated from a driving shaft through ratchet &c. gearing by crank and link mechanism, the link having a direct pivotal connection with a connecting rod pivoted to the crank, said pivotal connection being constrained by an angularly adjustable guide. A crank 21 carries a connecting rod 10 pivoted to a link 8 connected to a split, spring-pressed strap 6 frictionally engaging a ratchet wheel surrounding a pawl carrier fixed to the feed shaft 1; the pivot 12 of the link 8 and connecting rod 10, or a cross-head carried by the connecting rod adjacent the pivot, moves along a straight or arcuate guide 14 which, by means of toothed quadrants 17, 18, or gears, is angularly adjusted to vary the travel of the link and the throw of the ratchet. In case cf overload, the strap 6 slips on the ratchet wheel. Two sets of opposed ratchet gears may be provided and controlled by an intermediate clutch to permit reversal of the drive. Three or more cranks and associated ratchet mechanisms may be provided and arranged to operate in different phases to give a continuous feed.
