Periodic-counter speed indicators.-The average speed of a vehicle &c. over successive periods is registered by means of a number of pointers coupled in turn to the prime mover under a timing-control held stationary when the prime mover is stopped. A central shaft 6 driven from the vehicle has a gear wheel 8 adapted to drive a number of pointer spindles 5 one at a time through pinions 9 fixed to spindles 10 urged upwardly by springs 11. The upper ends of the spindles 10 are engaged successively by a cam surface on a disc 13, rotated by clockwork in the space 15, so as to couple the pointer spindles 5 to the drive. When the coupling has ceased each spindle is retained against spring-return by a ratchet-wheel 17 and pawl 18. Eventually a cam on the disc 13 rocks the pawl to free the spindle so that it returns to zero preparatory to its next coupling period. A masking plate 22 is connected with the cam disc 13 in order to cover those pointers which are undergoing the zeroizing and registering operation. To stop the clockwork while the vehicle is stationary, a ratchet drive 24 is inserted between the shaft 6 and the disc 13 to permit the latter to revolve only while the vehicle is travelling.
